2024 HBC Bicycle Maintenance/Repair Clinic

The Annual 2024 HBC Bicycle Maintenance/Repair Clinic was held three Saturday afternoons, January 6/13/20, 2024, at the Lemoyne Borough Building.

All three sessions were well attended with everyone attending receiving the information, training, bicycle knowledge, and bicycle maintenance service requested.

Week #1 was supported by three bicycle shop mechanics and four HBC mechanics or volunteer helpers.  Five people came out to work on their bicycles.  Better attendance was hampered by the snowstorm that day, but we all had a great time working on bicycles and talking bicycle topics.

Week #2 was supported by three bicycle shop mechanics and six HBC mechanics or volunteer helpers.  Fifteen people attended to work in their bicycles, learn tire changing and tube repair, watch and learn, and get one-on-one service and advice from the bicycle shop mechanics.

Week #3 was supported by four bicycle shop mechanics and five HBC mechanics or volunteers.  Sixteen people attended to work on their bicycles, such as by cleaning their bicycles, learn tire changing and tube repair, learn about normal inspection and maintenance items, obtain recommendations regarding what items or tools should be carried if issues arise during a bicycle ride, as well as get one-on-one help and advice from the bicycle shop mechanics.

As is normal during these clinics, some of the bicycle maintenance issues that arise require tools and parts that we do not have on hand during the clinic sessions.  In those case, we recommend the bicycle be taken to their normal or favorite bicycle shop, or one of the shops that attend and support the clinic.

A BIG Thank You goes out to the bicycle shops that supported our clinic, and the respective mechanics from the shops. The support of the local bicycle shops and their mechanics is very helpful (and greatly appreciated) to provide the knowledge and skills the HBC volunteers may not have.  They are as follows.

Ted Carskaden – Pedal Pusher – Harrisburg, PA

Eric Tuttle – Holmes Cycling & Fitness – Camp Hill, PA

Toni DeAngelo and Branden Martin – REI CO-OP - Mechanicsburg, PA

The HBC volunteers that helped as mechanics and helpers wereJohn Donoughe, Howard Ross, Lou Searles, Gary Smith, Bill Slabonik, and Ross Willard.

Also, thank you to Recycle Bicycle Harrisburg for providing bicycle repair stands, and a bicycle trainer for bike fit purposes.
